Coffins in Egyptian times were highly decorated with inscriptions and representations of gods like Anubis, who it was thought would protect the dead person on the journey to the next world. The body would be mummified before it was placed into the wooden coffin, as it had to be preserved to reach the afterlife.

Canopic jars were used in Ancient Egypt to contain the internal organs of people being removed during mummification.

A nice canopic jar featuring Qebehsenuef (also known as Qebsenuef). He was one of the four sons of Horus. Quebehsenuef deity is depicted as a falcon-headed creature on canopic jars; and he is responsible for keeping the intestines of the dead.
